NEW YEAR WELCOMED, QUIET RECEPTION AT DANDENONG.
Although Christmas Even in Dande-nong was the occasion for busy scenesand much jollity, New Year’s Eve forsome elusive reason was practicallythe reverse.Lonsdale street suffered ho conges-tion, and horse play and vandalismwere non existant. The local policereport having a very quiet time, theonly incident to come under noticebeing when several youths pushed abuggy from its resting place into theroadway. However, when cautioned,it was wheeled back undamaged, andorder was again restored. Over in-dulgence in “the glass that cheers”was strangely absent also. Only onecitizen was taken to the police station, and he was discharged later, minusthe customary fine.White-washed figures representingthe New Year appeared on very fewfences and walls—another tribute tothe efficiency and surveillance of thelocal force. Summed up, the openingof the New Year was one of thequietest on record—many residentsprefering to give parties in their ownhomes, while many others visited
dance halls and other entertainments.
