Coles, Dandenong, 1960.

Coles Dandenong 1960. This would be one of our stops on the walk back from the Dandenong produce market to Dandy South. Mum would buy me a pie from the cafeteria at the back. If there were a few coins left over from shopping I would get a matchbox car. We walked everywhere back then.

Noble Park Public Hall in 2003, and in 2017 after restoration.

In 1913 Alan Frank Buckley and Charles Luxford donated the allotments to the residents of Noble Park to build a public hall. At the time, residents raised money, under the Noble Park Public Hall Trust to build the original hall which was a small timber building.

Erected in 1925, is was good to see it close to original 100 years later.  In 1924 the trustees borrowed $4400 from the local council,  Shire of Dandenong, to erect a new brick hall. The title of the land was handed over to the council as security for repayment of the loan.

The two shopfronts at the front of the structure in the first picture were added in the 1970s. Thankfully these changes were reversed in the early 2000s, restoring the hall to its former glory.

Grenda’s Bus Services, 9 Foster Street, Dandenong, 1945.

In 1925 George Grenda started a milk carrying company. G. F. Grenda Milk Carrier collected milk in cans from farms around the Dandenong area and delivered it to metropolitan dairies. The family business continued to grow and was operating 12 trucks by 1945. George bought this property to house and operate the four bus routes, with the six buses (one pictured) he had bought.

He purchased six small buses, four bus routes (from Shaves Bus Service in Dandenong), and the primary foundations of a bus depot (pictured in 1945) that collaboratively would become Grenda's Bus Services. Grenda was purchased by Ventura Bus Lines in 2013.

Dandenong Railway Station and Surrounds, 1957.

This interesting photo shows the old Dandenong Railway station and surrounding area as seen in 1957. Foster street runs across the bottom, with Cheltenham Road running across the top.

This helps to place in perspective where the old steam turntable and sheds were located in relation to the present layout. Note the old water tower up on the right, a relic also lost to time.

Later the land where the turntable was would be repurposed for the Southern Aurora hotel, which in time would give way to and extension of the bus interchange and carparking for the station.

Dickins New World Supermarket, Douglas Street, Noble Park, 1965.

Store No. 549 (Noble Park) opened in 1965, on the same location still held today by Coles. Coles had previously bought the Dickins chain of stores.

Corner of Lonsdale & Walker Streets, Dandenong, 1850s.

One of the first buildings in Dandenong was the Dandenong Hotel built by George K. Dunbar in the late 1840's to early 50's. There was also Dunn's Hotel, a shanty located nearby in Thomas Street near the corner of Foster Street and a few other various structures scattered around the area.

During its short life, the hotel building was also used as a store and post office. and being the most pretentious house in the district, all public functions were held there.
