That photo was taken from the old Emptor distillery tower, later years Emptor Toyota. I remember in the early 80s, then became Sandown Air Conditioning in the early 90s, then around 2000 Coldow Air Conditioning, many a time when I work for Sandown Air Conditioning I would go up to the landing where the photo was taken to enjoy the view.

Westminster Carpets, Princes Hwy/Gladstone Road, Dandenong, 1964.

Just saw this in magazine just purchased from 1964. Westminster carpets site. I think around this time my mum was working next door at Victoria Carpets. All that vacant land!

Those paddocks at the back of Victoria carpets were Rogers poultry farm, until sold off for housing.

Hemmings/Potter Street intersection, Dandenong West, 1979.

We often shopped at Ellis’ supermarket in the 60s, there was a great little Chinese takeaway in Hemming Street also - you took your own saucepan in, and they would fill it to your requirements. Aaah, no plastic takeaway cartons back then.

Back in the 1950s the McKenry family lived in the right-hand corner house with the white fence and Mrs. Wheelhouse my grade 3 teacher lived opposite also on the right. I also remember Ellis’s grocery and taking a saucepan for the Chinese takeaway. No disposable containers back then. Great times!

Lonsdale Street, Dandenong, 1940s.

Point of view from in front of the Town Hall looking across to the other side, with the Cenotaph (war memorial) still located on the center median of Lonsdale Street. Woolworths opened in Dandenong around 1940.

The Vanity Court Arcade was built to the left of Woolworths; the site having been occupied by the Tharle Brothers Butchers in the early 1900s.

John Inoz writes:

Owen's Hardware store was there when we came to Dandy in 1959. Remember going in there with my mother. Coles later bought all those shops to build a bigger store than the small one they had a bit further up Londsdale Street. After that Woolworths bought up the remaining stores to extend and rebuild their store to match Coles.

Burials at Stud Road Native Cemetery.

Dandenong Fire Station, 1910.

Located on the triangle of land bounded by Mason, Walker and Robinson Streets.

The present-day location of the Walker Street Gallery has a long history with the local Fire Station. This building was moved in the 1930's to Bangholme, to make way for the new/present building, and became the Bangholme Memorial Hall and is still there and being used for Dances, the last I knew/checked on it.

This building was replaced with the present building around 1930, sadly the present building has had many modifications leaving it almost unrecognizable. The Dandenong Fire Station moved to bigger premises at 120 Princes Hwy in 1986, and they move again in 2021, further up the highway into bigger premises.

Myer in Dandenong being built around 1974.

The new Myer building in Dandenong, being built, around 1974. Looking across Clow Street from in front of the Dandenong Market. Safeway would later be built on the corner of Walker and McCrae Street opposite the Myer building. The Safeway site would later be rebuilt as Capital Centre, the basis of where the present shopping centre came from, after being connected over Walker Street, to join the Myer building.

Woolworth's and Safeway were separate companies until Woolworth's bought Safeway in 1985. They rebranded all of their stores as Safeway in Victoria, apart from 1 of 2 in the Karingal Hub centre. There were plenty of places that had 2 Safeway's for a while such as Springvale, Mt Waverley (Hamilton Pl and Virginia St) & Mentone (the current Woolies and the current Coles).

In the following image from a Lend-Lease Promotional booklet in 1993, you can see the Capital Center and Myer building, with Walker Street still running through to McCrae, before they were joined, creating the Dandenong Plaza. The former Woolworths was closed after Capital Centre opened.
