William James and Elizabeth Raymont were married in Sydney, in October of 1900, they spent some time living in rural Victoria, before moving to Noble Park around 1920. They were instrumental in the early days of the Methodist Church in Noble Park. Both immigrated from England at some earlier date.
Later, in the late 30s/early 40s, it would be run by their son, William Henry (Harry) James with Mr. Kerslake conducting the grocery section. William Henry (Harry) James was born about 1902, in rural Victoria, before moving to Noble Park with his parents.
Harry would marry Alma Seamer.
The building included two shops, one a traditional hardware store, and the other store selling household items for the kitchen, dining and furnishings. Established in 1920, W. James and Son later erected a brick building in 1928/29, which formed the basis of the James Building still standing today.
In 1951, W. James & Son, sought permission from the local council, for erection of a service station at the corner of Douglas Street and Leonard Avenue, in Noble Park.
