Dandenong House Hotel, 50 Foster Street, Dandenong.

The Dandenong House Hotel, a majestic 40 room guest house with dining room, ground floor tea rooms and an underground kitchen, first opened at 50 Foster Street in 1911.

The growing need for over night accommodation became obvious with the population swell brought on by market day. The site was destroyed by fire in 1977.

A portion of land, now a car park, at the rear of this property was sold been sold by previous owners in 1907 to enable the railways to dig a large trench and create a turn pike for railway engines to be turned around and point back toward Melbourne.

Walker Street Dandenong from the former AMP building looking past the Town Hall in the mid 1970's

A wonderful shot of Walker Street Dandenong from the former AMP building looking past the Town Hall in the mid 1970's.

Looking up Walker Street towards where the Plaza now stands, After Myers was built but before the telephone exchange was extended/rebuilt higher blocking the view of Myers carpark. This is from a postcard and is dated 30/04/1977 by the sender, so we can assume it is from similar time.

The white building in the front was the original Mechanics Institute of Dandenong, built in 1863

The white building in the front was the original Mechanics Institute of Dandenong, built in 1863. Before the Town Hall was built on the corner, The Mechanics Institute built a single story brick building (in 1876) right where the Hall would later stand (In front of the white building). The Town Hall was built in 1891.

Dandenongs original Library was hosted in the Mechanics Institutes white building and moved to their brick one. When the Town Hall was built the Mechanics Institute got rights to the upper floor as part of the settlement for handing the land to council for use for a Hall.

This old postcard of the Dandenong Town Hall has no date, but the words scrawled upon it tell a story of life a long time ago, leaving us with curious questions about the people involved.
